No pic following

Today's post is about how you appear as a follower on the blogs you follow.  I have noticed that some followers don't have any picture on their icon but just a silhouette outline of a head.  Now it might be that they are just shy.

However, Google in its infinite wisdom lists followers without images last in its follower lists.  So when a no pic follower signs up to follow you, you will see your follower number has gone up but unless you click right through to the end of your list of followers you won't be able to see who it is.

If you are a "no pic" follower, I suggest that you do go into your Google profile and add an image.  It doesn't have to be a photo of you.  It can be anything.  I have a water scene on my own one rather than a photo.

It is easy to change to being a Pic Follower.  Just go to your profile - one easy way to do that is to go to a site you follow and sign in .  Your icon will then come up and, if you click it, you will go to your profile - up the top right you will see "settings".  Click on that and you will be able to edit your profile including putting in an image.

Just make sure you crop or resize your image so that it will be accepted.  You can't use large image files for this.  Good luck.

Do you make it easy for people to follow you back?

If you are participating in blog hops - which are good at generating new followers, you need to make it easy for people to follow you back.  Just putting your blog name into the comment doesn't do it - unless you code it as a link. (Click here if you want to know how to do that).

When I click on the name of the person who has left me the comment that they are following, or on their thumbnail in Bloggers followers page, it is frustrating to find that the person's blog isn't listed and linked in.  Do check your Blogger and Google profiles to make it easier for people to follow back.

Blogger following limits

Did you know that Google won't let you follow more than 300 blogs?  Well, they try to stop you, anyway.  If you have been in the habit of signing up to follow blogs by using the Add button under Reading List on your Dashboard - like I was - you will find that once you are following 300 blogs it won't let you add more this way.

But there is a way around it - and I wish I had known about it a long time ago - I would then have only used the "add" button for non-GFC sites and life would have been smooth sailing.  All you do to get around it is to follow new sites by clicking the Google Friend Connect "Join this Site" - most blogs have it and Google will just keep adding the sites merrily into your reading list even if you have more than 300.

Follow back etiquette

This post is just a reminder that if someone signs up to follow your site, you should follow them back.  No exceptions.

But if you find you don't like their site after a week or two, then simply unfollow them.

Sometimes it is a bit tricky to work out which blog your new follower is from.  The Google names they follow on are often not blog names.  The first thing to do is to open your dashboard and click on followers.  Then click on the new follower's picture - this will take you to their Blogger profile.  Often under Links, their blog will be listed.  If you have tried to figure out which blog it is and failed, obviously you have done your best.

If you are going to follow a blog and want them to follow back, I suggest you put in a comment saying you are now a follower and include your blog's name.  This makes it easier for them to follow back.  And there is absolutely nothing wrong with asking for a follow back.

I guess you all know how to unfollow blogs using the Blogger Old Interface.  I have actually found that an easier way is to go to the blog, sign in as a member using your Google password and then Google will put your icon up at the top and you can click Options and then Site Settings and then Stop Following This Site - it will then ask you to confirm again that you really mean it.  Click and you are no longer following that blog.
